A snapped window handle is usually a five-minute fix once you have the right replacement. Here's how to identify and swap it.
If the handle snapped while the window was closed but unlocked, you can usually still open it by prising gently at the outer edge. If it snapped while locked, do not force it — you'll damage the espagnolette mechanism inside. Call a locksmith or window company to release the mechanism without further damage.
Take the broken handle off (two screws) and note three things: the spindle length (the metal bar that turns the mechanism), the screw centre distance (usually 43mm), and the handle style (espag inline, cranked, cockspur). Photograph the mechanism inside the sash. Any window hardware supplier can identify from this.
Screwfix, Amazon, and specialist suppliers (Trojan, Fab & Fix, Yale) all carry generic espag handles. Match the spindle length (7mm square section, various lengths from 20mm to 55mm) and screw centres. Locking (keyed) handles cost £8–£15; non-locking around £5. Choose keyed if the window is accessible from outside.
Remove the two screws holding the old handle. Slide the handle off the spindle. Fit the new handle onto the spindle (some designs require you to reverse the spindle for left-hand windows). Screw down evenly — don't overtighten, the screws thread into the uPVC and strip easily.
Most handle breakages come from overforcing when the mechanism inside is stiff. If the new handle also feels stiff to turn, the espagnolette mechanism needs lubrication (silicone spray, not WD-40) or, occasionally, replacement. A £30 lock mechanism replacement is cheaper than repeatedly snapping handles.
