What Goes Into a 313 Glass Bi-Folding Door
Every bi-folding door we install is engineered as a system. The frame, core, glazing, seals and ironmongery are specified together so the finished door performs as one — not as a collection of parts.
Thermally Broken Aluminium Profile
Our preferred system uses 6063-T6 grade aluminium extrusions with a polyamide thermal break running through the centre of the profile. This stops cold transferring from the outer face to the inner face — the reason a slim aluminium frame can still hit Building Regs U-values.
Heavy-Duty Stainless Running Gear
Each panel runs on twin stainless-steel rollers riding in a recessed bottom track. The rollers are rated for the full glazed weight of the panel (typically 80–120kg per leaf) and are sealed against grit — the part of a bi-fold that wears out first if you skimp on it.
Concealed Hinges & Shoot Bolts
Stainless hinges are housed inside the profile (not bolted to the face) and shoot bolts at the top and bottom of each panel anchor into the frame, so the closed door behaves structurally like a wall, not a stack of separate leaves.
Toughened, Argon-Filled Double Glazing
28mm sealed units with low-iron toughened glass and a soft-coat low-emissivity coating, argon-filled with a warm-edge spacer bar. Triple glazing is available where U-value targets demand it (typically passive-house or coastal exposure).
Multi-Point Locking & PAS 24
The master door (traffic leaf) carries a multi-point hookbolt lock with a 3-star anti-snap cylinder. The full system is independently tested to PAS 24:2022 — required for Approved Document Q on new-builds and a non-negotiable for insurer acceptance.
Aluminium-Only for Slim Sightlines
We specify aluminium rather than uPVC for bi-folds because the strength-to-weight ratio lets us run sightlines as slim as 90–110mm between glass on adjacent panels. uPVC bi-folds exist, but they need much chunkier mullions to carry the same panel size.
Finishes Worth Looking At Twice
The difference between a good door and a great one usually comes down to the finish. These are the details we obsess over.
Powder-Coated RAL Colours
Frames are polyester powder-coated to your chosen RAL — matt, satin or textured. The coating is baked on at 200°C and carries a 25-year colour-fastness guarantee, even on south-facing elevations.
Dual-Colour Frames
Specify any RAL externally and a different RAL internally — Anthracite Grey 7016 outside is the most popular, often paired with white or off-white internally to keep rooms feeling bright.
Threshold Detailing
Choose a weathered upstand threshold for maximum weather resistance, or a low/flush threshold (15mm or fully recessed) for level access — the latter requires a drained channel detail under the floor, which we set out at survey.
How a Bi-Folding Door Actually Performs
Indicative figures for the systems we typically specify. Final values vary by glazing pack, frame size and configuration — we confirm them in writing on every quote.
Achievable with a standard double-glazed pack; drops to ~1.0 W/m²K with triple glazing. Comfortably meets Part L for replacements and new-builds.
Single-run openings up to 6m+ with 7 panels. Corner configurations and structurally supported runs up to 12m are achievable on bespoke projects.
Independently tested. Toughened or laminated glass, anti-lift track blocks, hooked shoot bolts and anti-snap cylinder as standard.
Is a Bi-Folding Door Right For You?
We won't sell you a door that doesn't fit your project. Here's an honest view of when this product is the right call — and when it isn't.
Kitchen and dining extensions
Bi-folds are the right answer when you want the back of the house to fully open onto the garden in summer — birthdays, barbecues, kids running in and out. Stack to one side and you essentially remove the wall.
Narrower openings (under 3.5m)
On openings between 1.8m and 3.5m, bi-folds give you more clear opening width than sliding doors, because the panels stack out of the way rather than sliding behind a fixed panel.
Properties with limited garden depth
If the patio area is tight, an out-opening bi-fold lets you keep the internal floor space clear. If the garden is tight but the room is generous, an in-opening configuration works just as well.
Homeowners who'll genuinely use the opening
Bi-folds shine when they're regularly opened. If the door is going to stay closed 90% of the year and the view matters more than the opening, sliding doors are usually the better spend.
