How to Choose Window Handles and Locks

Espagnolette (espag) handles rotate a locking rod that engages multiple keeps around the sash — modern and secure. Cockspur handles were the 1980s standard and engage a single wedge in the frame — obsolete for security. If your existing windows have cockspur handles, they can often be upgraded to espag without replacing the whole window.

Ground-floor and accessible first-floor windows should have key-locking handles. It's a cheap change (£8–£15 per handle) that satisfies most home-insurance conditions. Keep keys nearby but not on the windowsill — insurers will check in the event of a claim.

Window restrictors limit opening to 100mm — the recommended maximum for any window a child can reach. They should be releasable by an adult for cleaning and emergency egress. In rental properties, restrictors are effectively mandatory on above-ground windows under the RRO 2005 fire safety regulations.

White, chrome, brushed nickel, black, gold and heritage bronze are the mainstream finishes. Coordinate handle finish with door hardware and light switches for a consistent interior — mixed finishes on the same wall look accidental. Powder-coated finishes carry 10-year guarantees; polished chrome pits after 5–8 years in coastal areas.

Most modern uPVC windows use standard-spindle handles that can be swapped in five minutes. Take the old handle off and measure the spindle length and the screw centres — those two numbers are all you need. A locksmith or window company will identify the model from a photo.
