Best Doors for a Side-Return Extension

A side-return extension usually adds 1.2–2.0m of width alongside a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, running the full depth of the ground floor. The rear elevation is often 3.5–5m wide — but the room is narrow. That combination affects both door choice and the position of the door within the rear wall.

At 3.5–5m openings, both bi-folds and sliders work, but they change the room differently. Bi-folds fold to one side, keeping that end of the rear wall clear (good). Sliders keep at least one panel across the middle (means you never lose all the wall). In narrow rooms, sliders often work better because the fixed panel gives a place for furniture to sit against internally.

Some side-return extensions have doors on two sides (rear and side) meeting at a corner. Corner sliding or bi-fold doors deliver dramatic openings but need a corner post that's usually a slim structural steel — factor 20–30% price uplift over a straight run of the same total width.

In a narrow side return, daylight from the side elevation is minimal (usually a party wall or fence line). Rooflights over the extension deliver most of the daylight. Coordinate the size and position of rooflights with the door design — the two work together, not separately.

Level thresholds work well in side returns because the extension floor usually meets a paved side alley or garden at the same level. This is one of the best applications for continuous flooring from indoor to outdoor. Get the drainage channel detail agreed before ordering the door.
