Where the condensation is tells you the cause
Condensation on the room-side of the inner pane = humidity in the room. Condensation between the panes = failed sealed unit (see our misted windows guide). Condensation on the outside face of the outer pane = a well-insulated window doing its job (that's actually good). Diagnose which before you spend money on a fix.

Why modern homes condensate more
Modern homes are airtight — that's a good thing for heating bills but a challenging thing for humidity. Moisture from cooking, showering, drying laundry indoors, houseplants and human breathing has nowhere to escape. Cold surfaces (window glass, especially at the edges) become the first place that moisture condenses.

Ventilation, not window replacement
If you replaced the windows and condensation got worse, it's not that the new windows are wrong — they're better, so they close off the accidental ventilation the old windows provided. The fix is intentional ventilation: trickle vents open in bedrooms, extractor fans running for 20 minutes after cooking or showering, and a dehumidifier in problem rooms.

When the window itself is the problem
Persistent condensation only at the edges of the pane (not the middle) suggests aluminium spacer bars. Upgrading to warm-edge spacers when the sealed unit next needs replacement will nearly eliminate this. If the frame itself feels cold to the touch on the inside, the window is too old to insulate properly — replacement is worth pricing.

Practical steps that actually work
Open trickle vents. Run the bathroom extractor for 20 minutes after every shower. Cover pans while cooking. Don't dry laundry on radiators. Keep bedroom doors closed and windows cracked at night. A £120 dehumidifier in a problem room pays for itself in comfort within one winter.
