Sliding vs French Doors: Which to Choose

French doors hinge outward or inward and swing open. Sliding doors move horizontally along a track without leaving the plane of the frame. That single mechanical difference drives all the other trade-offs.

Larger openings (over 2.4m), rooms where floor space is precious, elevations where the closed-state view matters most, and contemporary property styles. Slim-frame sliders in particular give sightlines a French door cannot match.

Smaller openings (under 2m), traditional property styles, exposed elevations where weather rating matters, and situations where you want the entire opening clear when open. The wow-factor moment of both leaves flung open onto a garden is uniquely a French-door experience.

Per metre of opening: French doors are typically the cheaper option (£1,000–£1,600/m), standard sliding falls around £1,500–£2,200/m, and slim-frame sliding runs £2,500–£3,500/m. All figures assume mid-spec double glazing and full installation with FENSA certification.

Sliders are often installed without adequate drainage detailing at the threshold, causing puddling on the internal track. French doors are often installed with insufficient rebate depth, leading to draughts on the passive leaf. Ask specifically about threshold drainage (for sliders) and passive-leaf shoot bolts (for French doors).
