Sliding doors are the right answer when the view matters more than the opening — here's how to spec them so they look and perform as intended.
Modern slim-frame aluminium sliders handle individual panes up to 3m tall and around 3m wide, but every metre added multiplies the pane's weight and cost. A 6m opening is better as three 2m panes than two 3m panes. Talk about the pane weight with your installer — panes over 200kg need craned installation and a two-person operating mechanism.
'2 pane, 2 track' means both panes move on separate rails — you can pass either side open. '3 pane, 2 track' has one fixed pane and two sliding — you get one clear opening. 'Pocket sliders' disappear into a cavity in the wall, giving the biggest possible clear opening but requiring the wall built to suit. Decide track configuration before the wall is built, not after.
Standard sliding doors have interlock stiles around 100mm wide. Slim-frame systems bring this down to 20–30mm — dramatic when you have two panels meeting mid-view. Slim-frame carries a real price premium (often 40–60% more), so it's worth it on the main garden view but rarely on a secondary elevation.
The glass is most of the door, so glass spec matters more here than on almost any other product. A good sliding door achieves whole-door U-values around 1.4 W/m²K with double glazing and 0.9 with triple. Ask for the whole-door U-value, not just the glass — the frame edge is where slim-frames sometimes underperform.
Sliding doors have rollers, guides and drainage channels that need occasional cleaning to keep running smoothly. Ask what the running gear is made of (stainless steel, not zinc), how the rollers are adjusted and whether they can be replaced without removing the pane. A 10-year guarantee should cover the gear as well as the frame.
