    Composite vs uPVC Doors: Which Is Right for You?

    Two very different products at very different price points — here's how to decide which is right for your home.

    Construction: solid vs hollow

    Composite doors have a solid core (typically polyurethane foam or timber) with a GRP outer skin. uPVC doors are hollow plastic panels reinforced with a steel bar. That structural difference explains most of the other differences: composite doors feel heavier, sound more solid when closed, insulate better and resist forced entry more effectively.

    Security

    Composite doors comfortably meet PAS 24 with a 3-star cylinder and multi-point lock; the solid core resists kick-through. uPVC panel doors can be specified to PAS 24 but the panel itself is a weak point — a determined attacker can punch through it. For front doors we recommend composite as the minimum standard.

    Thermal performance

    Modern composite doors achieve U-values around 1.0–1.4 W/m²K — genuinely excellent. uPVC doors sit closer to 1.4–1.8. Both are compliant with Building Regs but composite noticeably eliminates the cold-doorway feeling that older uPVC entrances have.

    Lifespan and appearance

    A quality composite door lasts 30 years without significant fade. uPVC doors last 15–25 years but their colour finish (typically foiled) is more prone to sun-fade on south-facing elevations. Composite doors carry through-body colour on GRP skins, so scratches don't show white plastic underneath.

    When uPVC still makes sense

    For low-use rear doors, garage side doors, or budget refurbishments where £800 matters, uPVC is a perfectly reasonable choice. It's also the right answer on lower-value rental properties where the ROI on composite doesn't stack up. Front door of an owner-occupied house: composite, every time.
