uPVC Tilt and Turn Windows
One handle, two ways to open: tilt inwards at the top for air, or swing the whole sash into the room.
What a tilt and turn window actually does
A tilt and turn window is a single sash on a clever hinge. Turn the handle a quarter and the top of the sash drops inwards by a few centimetres, leaving the bottom locked to the frame. Turn it a half and the sash releases along one side, so it opens into the room like a small door. Close it, return the handle to the down position, and the multi-point locking engages all the way round.
That sounds like a small mechanical trick, yet it changes how a room is used. Night-time air without leaving an opening anyone can reach through. Bedding shaken out of an upstairs window. Both faces of the glass cleaned from indoors, with no ladder and no hooked sponge on a pole.
Rooms where the style earns its place
We tend to suggest tilt and turn for upstairs bedrooms, loft conversions, flats above ground level and any room that faces a busy path. They also suit wide single openings where you want one clean sheet of glass rather than a split between an opener and a fixed pane.
They are less suited to spots where an inward-opening sash would hit something: a kitchen tap, a deep sill full of plants, a radiator shelf or blinds fitted inside the reveal. During the free survey we check the swing clearance so the window works with the room, not against it.
How we build and fit them
Every window we supply is uPVC and made to measure for the opening, so there are no standard sizes to squeeze in. You choose the frame colour, including woodgrain and colour foils, the handle finish and the glass. Energy-saving options include Planibel A low-emissivity glass in the sealed unit.
Installation is carried out by FENSA and CERTASS registered fitters, so the work is self-certified under Building Regulations and you receive the certificate for your records. If you would rather spread the cost, finance is available through our FCA-authorised arrangement (FCA 1055332).
Before you decide
If you are weighing this style against a traditional side-hung window, our comparison guide goes through operation, ventilation and cost in detail. This page is about getting a tilt and turn right for your opening: the survey, the specification and the fitting.
Common questions
- Can a tilt and turn window be used as a fire escape?
- The turn position opens the full sash into the room, which is why the style is often chosen where an escape opening is needed. We confirm the clear opening size at survey.
- Do they come in colours other than white?
- Yes. As uPVC windows they are available with woodgrain and colour foil finishes, chosen at quotation.
