Composite and uPVC Door Installation: What to Expect

Measuring, ordering and fitting a new front or back door, and how long the day usually takes.

    The short version

A new front or back door is typically fitted in a single visit, usually within a day. Before that, we survey and measure the opening, you choose the style, colour, glass and hardware, and the door is made to measure. On the day, our FENSA and CERTASS registered installers remove the old door and frame, fit and adjust the new doorset, seal it and show you how the locks work. The timings are general industry guidance; we confirm yours at survey.

    Choosing the door at survey

We fit composite doors and uPVC doors, all made to measure. A composite door has a solid, insulated core behind a tough outer skin, which gives the weight and feel of timber without the upkeep. A uPVC door is built on a 70mm Eurocell Logik profile with a PAS 24 doorset and a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder as standard. Our composite doors are tested to PAS 24:2022, the standard required for Approved Document Q on new builds.

At survey we measure the opening, look at the threshold and step, and check whether side panels or a toplight make sense. You pick colours inside and out, glass designs, handles, letter plates and knockers. We also check the swing and threshold height so the door works with your hallway and any level access needs.

    Manufacture and the fitting date

Because every door is built for its opening, there is a lead time while it is manufactured. We book your fitting date when we know the door will be ready, so you are not left with a date that slips. If you want to spread the cost, finance is available through our FCA-authorised arrangement (FCA 1055332).

    What happens on installation day

We protect the hallway floor and step, take out the old door and frame, and clean and check the opening. The new frame is fixed, levelled and packed so the door hangs true; a door that is even slightly out of square will drag or fail to lock properly, so this is the stage that takes care. The door is hung, the multi-point lock adjusted, and the threshold and gaps sealed inside and out.

Your home is secure again before we leave. We run through locking, keys and how to lift the handle to engage the multi-point lock, and take the old door away.

    After the fit

The installation is self-certified under Building Regulations through our FENSA and CERTASS registration, and you receive the certificate afterwards. Keep your spare keys and cylinder details somewhere safe. Doors can settle slightly in the first weeks; if anything feels stiff, get in touch rather than forcing the handle.

    Front, back and side doors

The same process applies whether it is a statement front door, a back door onto the garden or a side door into a utility room. French doors, bi-folding and sliding doors follow a similar survey and fitting approach, with aluminium used only for bi-folding and sliding doors.

Replacing a door in an older home

Older houses often have openings that are out of square, thresholds worn by decades of use or frames set into stone. None of this rules out a new door; it simply means the survey takes a closer look. We measure at several points rather than once, note any unusual step or sill, and allow for it when the door is made. On installation day the extra care goes into packing and levelling so the new doorset closes evenly, locks smoothly and seals properly, however irregular the opening started out.

    Common questions

How long does it take to fit a composite door?
Typically a single visit, usually within a day. We confirm timings at survey once we have seen the opening.
Will my house be left unsecured?
No. The new door is hung and locking before we leave.
Can you fit a door with side panels?
Yes. Side panels and toplights are measured and made to suit the opening.
Are your doors PAS 24 tested?
Our composite doors are tested to PAS 24:2022 and our uPVC doors use a PAS 24 doorset with a TS007 3-star cylinder.
